German knights were members of the Teutonic Order. 

The medieval knights in various regions all had the ability to sustain commercial avenues, while conducting military campaigns. The cost of warfare needed economic backing. Many of the Teutonic knights became astute businessmen who often became experts in trading commodities like wheat, hides, and wool. Over time they played a vital role in long-distance trade routes that stretched from Europe to the Middle East.
