Both the male and female egrets grow these awesome plumes. In fact, in 1886 each plume sold for $32/oz. Yes, 130 years ago! Back then that was twice the price of 2 oz of gold! In defense of the ladies who wore the plumes in their hats - the women WERE beautiful...but the poor bird.
