Details

Located on Lake Michigan, White Shoal lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

Some interesting facts about this essential lighthouse. All of the other lighthouses on the Great Lakes have cast iron lanterns. White Shoal uses aluminum. The highly visible red and white diagonal paint is sometimes called Candy Cane, but most prefer calling it the "barber pole" which makes it the only barber pole lighthouse in USA.

State of Michigan identifies with the White Shoal lighthouse so much that its image is used on some Michigan license plates. Michigan is only state that tries to save its lighthouses. The first lighthouses in the Great Lakes were in 1850's. By 1900 there were 334 lighthouses. Just 25 years later, in 1925, there were 433 lighhouses. White Shoal was built over a period of time beginning in 1870.
